Matthew Cameron, founder and chief executive of the TMC Agency and city leader of Founders Live Edinburgh, has announced that he is trekking across Scotland to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

On 8 May, Matthew will take on the challenge of the ‘Walk to Hope’, to raise funds for The Canmore Trust, a Scottish charity which supports people affected by suicide.

Starting from Edinburgh, Matt will walk 330 miles, in the space of 22 days, finishing up at Ben Hope, Scotland’s most northerly Munro.  He said: "I know what it feels like to believe there’s no way forward. This walk is about proving that no matter how tough life gets, there’s always a path out of the darkness.

“Step by step, I want to show people that hope is always possible."

Matthew who is not an experienced hiker or climber, will be averaging over 13 miles per day, through iconic trails such as the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way. He will also be wild camping and carrying all of his walking gear, in the face of Scotland’s unpredictable weather:

"This walk is going to be brutal, with long days, tired legs and more than a few blisters,” said Matthew: “But that’s the point — sometimes life feels like that too. And yet, we keep moving."

Having nearly taken his own life in 2019, Matthew's decision to take on this challenge is driven by his own mental-health journey and his desire to support others. In the last six years, he has dedicated his life to helping businesses build positive workplace cultures that protect employee well-being and which ensure that people have the support they need during difficult times:

"This journey isn’t about how far I walk,” he emphasised: “It’s about reminding people that they’re stronger than they know. Every step is proof that no matter what we face, we can keep moving forward."

Matthew will be documenting his challenge on social media, sharing the highs and lows of his journey:  "I won’t sugarcoat it,” he confirmed: “There will be bad weather, aching feet and moments I’ll want to quit. But there will also be incredible views, powerful conversations and a reminder that we’re all stronger than we think."
